The Monocle For Buitenplaats Koningsweg
Design in Harmony with Nature
This spatial design returns to the essence: what does not need to be there, is left out. Its silhouette, inspired by the abstract form of a tree, blends seamlessly into the surrounding forest. With its dark exterior, reflective windows, and wooden details, the Monocle appears like a shadow among the trees. Inside, every curve is used functionally, creating a refined and minimal living space. Built from recycled and repurposed materials, and equipped with the latest invisible technologies, the Monocle is designed without footprint. It is a place to live in harmony with nature — and to experience harmony within
The Vision — The Ten Principles of the Monocle
The Monocle is designed around ten guiding principles: it is unobtrusive, innovative, functional, aesthetic, understandable, honest, durable, detailed, environmentally friendly, and as minimal as possible.
Central to this vision is sustainability. All materials are recycled and documented in a Madaster material passport, ensuring full traceability and future reuse. In this way, the Monocle is not only built with respect for its environment today but also prepared for a second life tomorrow.
The Monocle is (un)noticeable.
With the Monocle, Buitenplaats Koningsweg gains a unique place of perspective. A space where design allows people to feel part of something greater. Subtle ideals are embedded in the form — from the two rounded ends that act as “telescopes” offering new viewpoints, to its elevated position that brings both clarity and calm.
